Brazil: Anti-FIFA protesters turn Copacabana Beach into necropolis
Row upon row of black crosses lined Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro Monday, to protest evictions in the area taking place amid World Cup building developments.
Each cross symbolises one community that was evicted or are at risk of being evicted due to World Cup construction works. The installation, organised by the citizens of the communities, placed each black cross, measuring 1,20 metres high, on the sand strip near the Princesa Izabel street, in Rio.
Moacyr Paiva, one of the organisers, said that the World Cup is being used as a pretext to evict humble communities. Today, Brazil plays against Cameroon as the World Cup enters it's next phase.
