Spain: Felipe VI sworn in as king during modest ceremony
People gathered outside Madrid's Royal Palace on Thursday to watch the proclamation of Spain's new King Felipe VI. It was a modest ceremony, with the king swearing his oath on the country's constitution which he has promised to uphold. Thousands gathered ourside the Royal Palace to commemorate their new king.
After the ceremony he addressed the Congress of Deputies, saying he would deal with Spanish concerns about the economic crisis in the country. He also indicated his opposition to Catalan seperatism by making references to 'a united Spain'.
A planned republican rally was banned by authorities and some 7,000 police officers were deployed in the capital to ensure the ceremony went uninterrupted. Despite this, hundreds of protesters still took to the streets to voice their dissent and demand the birth of a republic.
