Azerbaijan: Lavrov warns Kiev gov against martial law and "ethnic cleansing"
The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a press conference following negotiations with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku on Wednesday.
Answering questions from the press, Lavrov discussed the ongoing situation in Ukraine, warning the Ukrainian government of imposing martial law in the country's conflict-ridden south-east. He also said the proposal of allowing "so-called separatists" to leave the country is akin ethnic cleansing, before criticising the Kiev governments approach to gas negotiations.
Lavrov is in Azerbaijan on an official two-day visit, during which he will also hold talks with President Aliyev Ilham Aliyev. The sides will discuss key issues of regional and international importance, including the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region and mounting tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Preparations for the Fourth Caspian Summit in Astrakhan are also likely to be discussed.
