One of the longest French railway strikes in recent memory has also led to around 200 activists occupying the construction site of the Paris Philharmonic hall at 6:30 on Wednesday morning. Although the cultural workers occupying the site form part of a difference sector to the railway workers, both are protesting against proposed government reforms.
CRS police forces took control of the barricades at around 10:50 and then sent an intervention squad onto the site to clear the area. Among other demands the protesters insisted their banners remain in place on the building site until construction is finished. As of 16:00 a handful of protesters remained on the roof.
With general labour unrest reaching a crescendo in France, part-time workers will join up with striking railway workers on June 19 to unite their grievances and provide mutual solidarity. Both part-time workers and railway workers are represented by the same union federation - the Confederation General du Travail. Construction on the Philharmonic concert hall is due to finish in 2015.
