UN: Churkin urges UN to create "humanitarian corridor" in Ukraine
The Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin spoke to press in the New York UN Headquarters on Tuesday, saying that it would be very important to adopt "rapidly" the draft resolution presented by Russia on Monday to the members of the Security Council. The draft intends to create a humanitarian corridor that would allow Ukrainians to escape from areas affected by fighting.
Asked about the possibility that the situation in Eastern Ukraine might change after the inauguration of the new Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko, he said "we were told that after his election on May 25th things were going to improve, but unfortunately the situation kept deteriorating only greater use of force and Mr. Poroshenko made some statements about the need to intensify the military operation in Eastern Ukraine."
