Singapore: China is destabilising the region - U.S. Secretary of Defence Hagel
U.S. Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel spoke at the 2014 Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, during which he accused China of "destabilising" the region.
Hagel said the US would "not look the other way" when fundamental principles of the international order were violated, accusing China of acting unilaterally and employing intimidation and coercion in order to achieve its goals.
Chinese officials criticised Hagel for his remarks, including Major General Zhu Chenghu of the People's Liberation Army. Gen. Zhu accused the U.S. of making key strategic mistakes in the South China Sea dispute, adding the key to a peaceful U.S.-China partnership will be dependent on whether the U.S. treats China with respect.
