The streets of Donetsk were empty and all shops and restaurants closed on Monday evening as fighting continued to rage in and around the city's International Airport and central train station.
Donetsk Mayor Oleksandr Lukyanchenko has urged residents to remain in their homes and to avoid travelling to the areas affected by the fighting.
