India: Gandhi family remember Rajiv after Congress party defeat

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi, paid homage to Rajiv Gandhi in New Dehli on Wednesday, marking 23 years since the former Indian prime minister's death.

Sonia and Rajiv's daughter Priyanka and son in-law Robert Vadra, and President of India Pranab Mukkerjee, were also present at the ceremony, held at Gandhi's memorial in Vir Bhumi.

Inaugurated at the age of 40, Rajiv was India's youngest prime minister. He was assassinated in 1991 in Tamil Nadu during a poll campaign.

The anniversary comes just two days after congress leaders Sonia and Rahul offered to step down on after the party suffered its worst ever election defeat, however party officials declined.
