Russia: Five dead, dozens injured after train collision

At least five people have been left dead and 45 injured after a freight train crashed into a passenger Moscow-Chisinau train on the Bekasovo-Nara railroad near the regional centre of Naro-Fominsk, a town 50 km southwest of Moscow, Tuesday.

Injured passengers are being carried out of the carriages by hand, with hundreds of rescue workers at the scene, along with the assistance of several helicopters for evacuations.

First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Olga Golodets has said 18 injured passengers are in a serious condition at local hospitals.

Russian Railways has deployed two maintenance parties, consisting of 45 repair personnel and 16 units of equipment, to put the carriages back on the rails and repair the railroad infrastructure.
