Russia: You've got to see what these tanks are doing
Trials for a paramilitary sport consisting of armor biathlon tank races and precision gunnery got underway in Volgograd, Tuesday, with numerous crews battling out practice runs of covering nearly 20 kilometres (12 miles) in the shortest time whilst successfully hitting targets.
Each tank has in its arsenal: a cannon, a ranging machine gun and an anti-aircraft machine-gun mounted on its turret, with the crew members having to reach non-static targets which can emerge at a distance of 600 metres (1,969 ft).
From May 13-20, 15 tanks and six armoured vehicles from the Southern Military District of Russia will go up against each other as part of the trials. The selected winners will then compete for a jury situated some 2.5 kilometres from the range (who will watch the tanks using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the air), at the Alabino training centre, Moscow in August, 2014 for the year's competition.
