Russia: Gazprom to supply gas to Ukraine on advance payment basis
Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev said Monday that Gazprom is to start supplying gas to Ukraine basing on advance payments starting from May 13.
During a meeting with Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Energy Minister Alexander Novak, the Russian PM said that the Ukraine should be introduced to this deal on the following day.
“A switch to advance payments doesn't imply a suspension in supplies of natural gas. It means they get as much as they pay for. If they pay one euro, they're going to get one euro worth of gas, if they pay a billion, we are going to supply one billion worth of gas,” said Medvedev during the meeting, stressing that Gazprom exhausted all other possibilities to agree on a solution with Kiev.
The Russian PM also noted that Europe should send a message to the Ukrainian authorities regarding the need for gas debts to Russia to be paid off.
