Uganda: The first homosexuals to face severe anti-gay laws
The first Ugandans to be tried under the revised sodomy laws arrived in court in Kampala Wednesday. Although the charges have existed in Uganda since British colonial times, the change to the law, enacted in February, means they could face life sentences.
Mukasa Jackson and Mukisa Kim were arrested in January after facing a large group of anti-gay protesters.
The new bill was enshrined in law in February by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, calls for repeat offenders of acts of homosexuality to be jailed for life. The law also prohibits the promotion of homosexuality and obliges people to hand in homosexuals to the authorities.
