The re:publica conference kicked off in Berlin's Kreuzberg district on Tuesday, with British journalist and Wikileaks attorney Sarah Harrison giving a keynote speech.

Harrison called on the European governments to stand with Germany were it to offer asylum to whistleblower Edward Snowden, and to prevent the US from having "dominance" over the country.

US internet activist Jacob Appelbaum and US pop icon David Hasselhoff also spoke on the first day of re:publica, which will run until May 8.
