USA: Secession bid fails at Wisconsin GOP convention
Delegates from the Wisconsin Republican Party voted against a resolution Saturday in Milwaukee that would have demanded state officials pass bills that would nullify federal laws and affirm the state’s right to secede from the United States. The resolution was defeated at the party’s annual convention.
Representatives from southeastern Wisconsin's 6th congressional district drew up the resolution in March. It demanded lawmakers uphold Wisconsin’s right to secede from the U.S. under "extreme circumstances" as interpreted in the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Numerous Wisconsin GOP figures, including Governor Scott Walker. Delegate Don Hilbig, representing Rock County, argued in favour of the resolution, saying that legally it is still an open question and a "sovereign right."
