      Spain: May Day gets medieval at Castle Belmonte

      Around 500 armoured knights from over 19 countries helped make things medieval at Spain's Belmonte Castle, Thursday, as the World Championship in Medieval Combat kicked off. Single combats will be fought with short swords and shield, long swords and pole arms. Group battle in five-against-five and even 16-versus-16 battle royales to find out which nations reigns supreme.

      Belmonte Castle played a starring role in the 1961 Charlton Heston film "El Cid." The competition lasts until Sunday and, though deaths were common at such tournaments during the Middle Ages, no one is expected to die.
