Greece: Boat protest condemns chemical weapons in the Med
Small-boat owners, university students and members of the International Initiative for Peace in Syria staged a boat protest off the coast of Sfakia, in southern Crete, on Sunday, to demonstrate against the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons in the Mediterranean Sea. Among the organisers of the event was mayor of Sfakia Pavlos Polakis.
Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos had recently expressed concern over the effects of the process on environment and tourism, and stated the need for the European Union's monitoring, suggesting the arsenal is destroyed in the Atlantic Ocean instead.
The chemical weapons, whose destruction deadline is June 30, are due to be transported from Syria to the Italian port of Gioia Tauro and then loaded onto a ship for their destruction in the Mediterranean Sea.
