Philippines: Bloody protest against US empire of bases
Protests continued in central Manilla on Friday against President Barack Obama's weeklong tour of Asia. Obama is scheduled to visit the Philippines on April 28 following trips to South Korea and Malaysia.
Organised by left-wing organisations Sanlakas and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), the protesters oppose the U.S. "pivot to Asia," the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) and the Agreement on Enhanced Defence Cooperation. The latter will give the U.S. access to military bases in the Philippines and enable the US military to deploy additional troops, ships and aircraft throughout the country.
Part of the International League of Peoples' Struggles, Bayan released a statement earlier in April referring to the U.S. as a "rapist." The organisation supports the assertion of national sovereignty, opposes "imperialist powers" and promotes peaceful international relations through non-alignment.
