Russia: Anti-Russia hysteria existed before Ukraine - Lavrov
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke out against "the hysterical anti-Russia propaganda" that swept across EU and US media prior to the escalation of unrest in Ukraine, in Moscow on Thursday.
Making his comments during an introductory speech for the Global University Forum at the MGIMO University, Lavrov added that anti-Russian sentiment surrounding the lead up to Sochi predated Ukraine being "on the agenda". The Russian foreign minister also drew parallels between the Western perception that de-escalation in Ukraine depends on Russia singularly raising its voice, to similar standpoints on Syria and Iran. Lavrov said that though Russia is "flattered by this idea", the government favours joint efforts.
The Global University Forum in Moscow will be attended by leading professors and universities from across the world. This year's focus is on new mechanisms for stimulating economic development, forecasting and preventing global risks; international security; food security and the health system. Special sections are devoted to traditional subjects related to regional security.
