UK: EDL crashes anti-UKIP protest in Newcastle
Dozens of protesters gathered outside Newcastle's Sage Gateshead venue, where UKIP party leader Nigel Farage was due to host the party's largest public meeting to date, on Wednesday. As the protest was winding down, several members of the English Defence League (EDL) attempted to join the protest.
Protesters from various organisations declaring themselves anti-fascist joined in an hour-long speakout against Farage, who they say is promoting bigotry and an anti-immigrant message.
Members of the Labour Party had earlier criticised Farage's move to host the public meeting at the Sage Gateshead, as the venue was built using a European contribution of over £5.6 (€6.8) million.
