India: First trans candidate enters election race
Bharathi Kannamma, the first transgender candidate to run for India's lower house of parliament the Lok Sabha, rallied support in Kulamangalam village on Tuesday.
Kannamma, 53, is independently contesting the Madurai District constituency, in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kannamma's candidacy follows a ruling by India's Supreme Court mandating national recognition of transgender people as a third gender on April 15.
Marking a regional trend, in neighbouring Pakistan seven transgender candidates are running for the May 11 general election for the first time. Members of the 16th Lok Sabha will be elected during the 2014 General Elections to be held in India from 7 April to 12 May 2014.
