Visitors to the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin shared their views, Tuesday, about a petition by German newspapers Bild and B.Z. to remove two memorial Soviet T-34 tanks in protest over Russia's actions in Crimea and Ukraine. A woman who formerly lived in the Urals said she believes the tanks should remain, as did memorial visitor Stuart McGrady.
The Soviet War Memorial, built in 1945, commemorates the tens of thousands of former Soviet Red Army soldiers who died in the Battle of Berlin at the close of World War II. The petition by Bild, Germany's best-selling newspaper, and B.Z. asks the German parliament to pass a measure to remove the tanks from the memorial, which is located 200 metres (656 feet) from the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate.
