Ukraine: Tents surround occupied admin building in Donetsk
Pro-Russian protesters entrenched their position in an encampment outside the regional administration building in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, Saturday.
Organisers handed out Russian newspapers from one of the numerous tents erected at the camp, surrounded by wire fencing reinforced with tyres.
The protesters were joined by Ukrainian miners on Thursday, despite a 48-hour notice being served by the Rada-appointed government in Kiev, Wednesday, ordering them to clear the area. Ukrainian officials are trying to negotiate a deal whereby protesters would vacate the camp in return for immunity from prosecution Rada-appointed interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said in a visit to Donetsk on Friday. Protesters have occupied buildings in the eastern Ukrainian cities of Lugansk, Donetsk and Kharkov since March 30, calling for a referendum on greater autonomy from the central government in Kiev.
