India: Blinged out elephants are the stars of Pooram Temple Festival
Around 70 magestically adorned elephants stamped through the streets for the colourful Pooram Temple Festival in the south west Indian city of Karala Saturday.
In a spectacular pageant dedicated to Hindu idols, elephants embellished with gold headresses and decorative bells carry deities from nearby temples through Arattupuzha village. Afterwards the elephants proceed to a nearby river to be immersed in water as part of a cleansing ceremony, which is accompanied by mantras and floral offerings.
Thousands of visitors from surrounding areas descend on Arattupuzha village for the seven day festival, which culminates in the Sasthavinte Melam elephant parade.
