India: Largest election in history begins
India's nine-phase general elections got underway in six constituencies including Assam's Dibrugarh on Monday. India uses an electronic voting system, with those who cast a vote having their nail painted blue. This stops people from casting a vote more than once. The voting started at 7am local time and continues until 5pm.
Voters in four other constituencies in the state of Assam - Lakhimpur, Tezpur, Kaliabor and Jorhat - and one in Tripura headed to a total of 10,193 polling stations to cast their votes. A total of 1,221 of the polling stations in Assam are considered "hypersensitive" and will be manned by paramilitary forces, while another 2,710 have been categorised as "critical".
Around 814 million people are eligible to vote in India, making this year's election the largest in history.
