Italy: Baker switches from vanilla to chocolate for Obama

Over 5,000 specially made Barack Obama chocolate cakes were given away for free when the U.S. president visited Rome, Thursday. The cakes were originally made with vanilla, but for the first U.S. black president, the cakes were baked with chocolate instead.

The cakes are made by Angelo Bisconti, a baker from Puglia in southern Italy who first produced the cakes in early 2009. As a huge fan of Barack Obama, Bisconti's visit to Rome coincides with Obama's Vatican City visit. He claims to have sent samples of his cakes to Italy's U.S. embassy.

The popularity of the cakes has enabled Bisconti to expand his business from running a small bakery to opening a factory on July 4 2013 in Campi Salentina. With Italy's unemployment rate currently at a record high of 13 percent, Bisconti's success has been achieved throughout the worst of the global financial crisis.
