France: Thirty-four Greenpeace activists arrested at nuclear plant
French police arrested 34 of 56 Greenpeace activists who tried to break into the nuclear power plant Fessenheim near Strasbourg on Tuesday.
The activists forced the way in with a truck and hung banners on the power plant, operated by EDF. However security was not compromised, as they did not enter its buildings. The power plant continues to function normally.
Seventy-five percent of France’s electricity mix comes from nuclear energy. The government is hoping to cut this number to 50 percent and close Fessenheim by 2016. Greenpeace activists want the power plant to be shut down immediately.
