Citizens of the Black Sea resort of Yalta voted in the referendum on the future of Crimea on Sunday. Polling stations recorded brisk business, with a majority of people turning out to register their ballots.
According to official exit polls, more than 90 percent of Crimean citizens are expected to vote for accession to the Russian Federation.
Crimea first became part of Russian Empire in 1783. It became part of Ukraine SSR in 1954, during the presidency of Ukraine born USSR President Nikita Khruschev. Yalta took on historical significance as the host of the conference in 1945 the settled post-World War II reorganisation between the USSR, UK and the USA.
