Ukraine: Crimeans vote in former capital of Tatar Khanate
Voters entered the polling stations in the city of Bakhchisaray on Sunday to participate in a referendum to decide Crimea's future, whether it will join the Russian Federation or remain an autonomous region of Ukraine. The Majilis of the Crimean Tatar People, a representative body for the Crimean Tatars has called for a boycott of the referendum.
Around 70 EU observers are posted around the region to monitor the voting, visit polling stations and will participate in counting votes. Every voter coming to the station is checked for marks on their hands to prevent a person from casting their vote more than once.
Crimea first became part of the Russian Empire in 1783. It became part of Ukraine SSR in 1954, when the Ukrainian-born Nikita Khrushchev was First Secretary of the Soviet Union.
