Sunday polls opened at 8:00 local time (6:00 UMT) throughout Crimea as civilians rose early to vote in the referendum. Sevastopol city administration acting head Dmitry Belik was one of the first to vote, telling the press afterwards, "We lived years in exile. Today we are going to our home".
The voting will go on for 12 hours, during which Crimeans will decide whether the Autonomous Republic of Crimea will join the Russian Federation or remain part of Ukraine.
There are 1.5 million ballots printed and 1,205 polling stations located throughout the region. According to Crimean authorities there are 135 registered international observers and 1200 local observers monitoring the voting at the ballot stations.
