Cyprus: Arrests made at anti-privatisation protest
Arrests were made outside the Cypriot parliament in Nicosia as hundreds protested against a bill for a planned state-utility sell-off on Thursday.
An evening vote saw the Cypriot Parliament turn down the bill to privatise the Cyprus Ports Authority, Cyprus telecoms firm Cyta and the electricity authority EAC. The terms of the legislation now face renegotiation. A sell-off of the state assets was part of the terms imposed on Cyprus by its international lenders.
Around 200 riot police set up barricades near the protesters, who brandished banners with slogans such as "hands off."
