Germany: Cologne goes crazy as Carnival kicks off
People travelled from all over Germany to Cologne to start the carnival celebrations on Thursday. Crowds of revelers wore fancy dress, such as chicken costumes or blow-up superhero outfits. People danced and drank in the street, with celebrations expected to carry on until the early hours.
Carnival in Cologne, also called the fifth season of the year, traditionally begins on November 11 at 11:00. However the real celebrations, or Crazy Days, don’t start until Shrove Thursday, befor carrying on for five days until Carnival Monday.
During this time people dress up in fancy dress and celebrate all day long in the street. Parades take place all over the city and closing times for pubs and bars are suspended for the duration of the festival. It is also a custom during this time for women, kitted out in fancy dress, to slit men’s ties in half in exchange for a kiss.
