Uganda: Tabloid prints list of '200 top homosexuals'
A Ugandan tabloid newspaper went on sale in the country on Tuesday claiming to have ‘exposed’ the nation's ‘200 top’ homosexuals. The newspaper's release comes a day after President Yoweri Museveni signed into law a bill toughening penalties against those who engage in homosexual acts. Footage shows newspaper stands and streets scenes in the capital, Kampala.
Edward Chelangat, a radio presenter at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, questioned the professionalism of Red Pepper in publishing the piece.
The new law includes the criminalisation of the “promotion of homosexuality,” including the production, broadcasting or dissemination of pornographic materials. The law also states that acts of "aggravated homosexuality" could be punishable by life imprisonment. Engaging in homosexual acts is already illegal in Uganda.
