Ukraine: Pro-Russian mayor replaces Kiev's choice in Sevastopol
Sevastopol residents gathered outside the city administration building in their hundreds Monday in support of mayoral candidate, Aleksei Chaly. Chaly was chosen to become mayor at a Sunday rally attended by 20,000 Ukrainians who are in favour of building closer ties to Russia in the wake of Ukraine's political change. They also resolved to stop paying taxes to the central government in Kiev.
Locals chanted 'Chaly' and cheered as he left the administration building and addressed the crowd.
Chaly's election was declared illegal on the local city administration's website Sunday, prompting Monday's rally. City authorities have now reportedly recognised Chaly's election as legitimate and officially appointed him as mayor.
