Belgium: Barroso calls for sanctions against Ukraine
President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso called on Member States to agree on measures against those responsible for the violence in Ukraine as "a matter of urgency", speaking in Brussels on Wednesday.
Barroso condemned the use of violence as a way to solve a political conflict, and said that there are no circumstances which can justify the recent events in the country. He said that there is a government's responsibility to ensure the protection of the citizens, and called on both sides to "engage into a serious dialogue".
The European Commission president reiterated EU's support for a constitutional reform, and said that Ukraine's integration in the EU "remains on the table" but is not the ultimate goal of the cooperation.
