Macedonia: Police and unemployed clash over unpaid bonuses
Hundreds of former state firm workers clashes with police during a protest outside the government building in Skopje on Tuesday.
Many of the protesters lost their jobs after state firms went bankrupt during the country's transition into a free market economy. Although the rally started peacefully, violence broke out after protesters were told that government spokespeople were not willing to talk to them.
Organizer of the demonstration, Liljana Georgievska, was arrested during the protest. Lenka, the Macedonian Movement for Social Justice and left-wing movement 'Solidarity', were among the groups supporting the protest.
In January, the Macedonian government introduced a monthly bonus of 100 Euro (137 USD) to those who used to work for the now defunct firms. However according to Georgievska, only 350 workers out of 7,000 had received the benefit.
