Georgia: Former PM Merabishvili sentenced to 5 years
Former Georgian Prime Minister Ivane 'Vano' Merabishvili was sentenced to five years in prison in the Kutaisi City Court on Monday, on counts of embezzlement, abuse of office and bribery of voters.
Arrested in May 2013 and accused of putting nearly 22,000 party campaign workers on the ministry payroll, Merabishvili's court case lasted four months. He was charged in the case with former Kakheti Governor Zurab Chiaberashvili, who was fined 21,148 euro (USD 30 000).
Merabishvili was interior minister for approximately eight years. He then held the position of the head of government for one year, ahead of a parliamentary election in 2012.
