Spain: Prostitutes protest against new streetwalking laws
Around 100 sex workers and members of prostitutes' rights group Hetaira took to the streets of Madrid on Saturday to demonstrate against a planned crackdown on streetwalking.
The protesters defended the livelihood of sex workers, rallying against the local council's plans to fine prostitutes and those who pick them up on the street.
Demonstrators argued that such laws will increase their vulnerability, worsen working conditions and reduce possible earnings, and claim that the council favour the interests of private sex clubs. According to November's draft law, offering or soliciting sex in prohibited areas will be punishable by a fine of up to €30,000 ($40,000). Approximately 400,000 prostitutes are currently working in the country.
