      Hundreds of San Franciscans descended on the city's Justin Herman Plaza with pillowcases in hand for the annual Valentine's Day pillow fight on Friday, a Bay Area tradition dating back to 2006. More an affectionate tussle than an all-out street battle, the skirmish nevertheless continued for several hours after the sun had set.

      Not everyone shares the atmosphere of festive joy however, with city officials in 2012 estimating the cost of cleaning up mounds of feathers, shredded foam and pillowcases at around $5,000 (€3,600).
