Dignitaries from Thailand, the U.S. and numerous partner nations attended an opening ceremony on Tuesday to mark the official start of Cobra Gold 2014 (CG 14) exercises at Camp Akatosorot, in Phitsanulok province.
The annual Cobra Gold military exercises bring together about 13,000 servicemen from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and the United States. For the first time this year China is sending observers to the 11-day drill, as announced by the Chinese Ministry of National Defense.
The annual multi-national military exercises are the largest in Asia and involves a wide range of scenarios, including humanitarian relief drills. The Chinese squad will participate in humanitarian, command, coordination, engineering and medical aid drills.
