Ukraine: Russian missile destroyer Smetlivy steams into Black Sea port
The Smetlivy, a Kashin-class guided missile destroyer belonging to the Russian Navy, returned to the port of Sevastopol in the Ukraine on Saturday. The warship and its crew arrived from the Mediterranean after taking part in Russian-Italian joint drills close to Syrian shores.
Kashin-class destroyers, only one of which is currently in active service with the Russian Navy, are designed as anti-air defence and fleet escort vessels. The Smetlivy currently carries a complement of Kh-35 Switchblade anti-ship missiles, a naval version of the S-125 Neva surface-to-air launch system and two AK-630 Gatling turrets.
With the USS Mount Whitney and the USS Taylor in internationals waters off the coast of Sochi, Russia has recalled the Smetlivy at a time when two US Navy ships are operating in the Black Sea. US officials claim this is in case of an emergency involving its athletes and officials.
