Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City hails nation's first McDonalds

Fast food giant McDonalds opened their first restaurant in Vietnam's business centre and largest city on Saturday, prompting long queues of keen customers waiting for the taste of their first Big Mac.

Vietnam is a popular hub for U.S fast food brands, with 29 Burger Kings nationwide after the first opened in 2011. Subway and Pizza Hut are also available.

As a country in rapid transition following free-market reforms in the 1980s, Vietnamese officials have expressed concern about the effects of change on the future of the country's cultural and national identity. This led to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signing a decree in July 2013 offering free tuition to students taking university courses in Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh studies following a sharp decline in their popularity.
