      Ukraine: 'We're no banana republic' - Kiev protesters at US embassy

      Ukrainian protesters rallied at the US embassy in Kiev on Wednesday against what organisers perceive as an American role in the pro-European protest movement that swept the country in the last two months.

      Protesters built a barricade out of empty banana boxes and wielded posters reading 'Ukraine is not a banana Republic'.

      Another poster read 'No to Civil War' in what one organiser said was a rejection of "the imperialistic US policy that pushes Ukraine towards war".

      The protest came as EU foreign chief Catherine Ashton met Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Wednesday.
