Belgium: Putin pledges to work with Europe on Syrian peace
Russian President Vladimir Putin held a joint press conference with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy at the EU-Russia summit in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Ukraine, as well as other issues concerning Russian-EU relations.
In light of the Geneva talks currently in place as well, Putin did not hesitate thank the European powers for their cooperation, saying: "We have also taken on the issues of Iran and Syria. The most important thing here is the Geneva II talks have started, due to our joint efforts. We are recognisant of how much our European partners contributed."
"This also pertains to certain accomplishments that have been reached so far in the Iranian negotiating process. There are lots of things to be accomplished on that track too, but we have agreed to continue pursuing it further including at the expert level such as ministers of foreign affairs, who also look at the issue of Afghanistan including in light of the pending international forces withdrawal."
"I have confidence that all of our discussions have been substantive and useful, and that they have opened up specific goals in our joint efforts."
President Putin will be joined by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who earlier met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
