Switzerland: 'Smash the WEF' protesters yell as Davos ends
Around 70 protesters rallied in Bern on Saturday, to demonstrate against the World Economic Forum's policies as the 44th annual WEF meeting draws to a close in Davos. Gathering around Bern's main train station, the protesters walked around the town centre while chanting anti-capitalist slogans and throwing coloured smoke bombs.
Riot police deployment was limited, and undercover officers also patrolled the streets. Among the actions the anti-WEF demonstrators staged was a 'freeze flashmob' inside a shopping mall. They also wrote anti-WEF slogans in chalk on buildings and pavements in Bern's main tourist and shopping district.
Police secured banks and other possible targets from any violent actions protesters might take against them. The protesters intended to release dozens of red balloons inside the UBS Swiss bank branch at the train station square, but security measures were tight, causing protesters to cancel the action.
World leaders from the G20 countries are meeting in the Swiss town of Davos between 22-25 January for the 44th annual World Economic Forum.
