Members of the Kuban Cossack military unit patrolled the streets of Sochi along with police on Thursday, to help ensure security in the lead up to the Winter Olympic Games due to begin next month.
There are more than 800 Cossack members taking part in Olympic patrols in the area. The city patrols are on duty for a 24/7 regime, with shifts lasting 12 hours.
Historically, the Kuban Cossack Host were mounted cavalry units of the Russian Imperial Army, created in 1860 and existing until 1918. The modern Kuban Cossacks were re-established in 1990, as a civilian force that supports the police on foot patrol.
