USA: NSA insiders say Obama is failing to curb spying

A group of former NSA agents and analysts held a whistleblowers conference after President Obama's speech on intelligence regulation in Washington, D.C. on Friday, criticising the administration's plans to put a limit on surveillance of US and foreign citizens.

"His idea of transparency for the court, the FISA court, is a good one, but we need some way to ensure that it really is transparent," said Bill Binney, a former technical director at the NSA. "I think we ought to restrict their rulings to foreign intelligence, not domestic intelligence, and also not passing judgement on what is and is not constitutional. You don't do that kind of thing in secret. That means you have a secret constitution, a secret government if they do that."

According to Russ Tice, former NSA analyst, the NSA has already extended its programme of communications-gathering beyond the metadata capture exposed by Edward Snowden.

"I have a feeling that when he [President Obama] says this programme, that's not the domestic programme he's talking about," said Mr. Tice. "Because that programme has been used in the very recent past to collect everything that we're saying, except for the stuff that gets thrown out as spam. Word-for-word content."

"As far as I'm concerned, we take all of these nodes domestically that have been set up, we unplug all of them. We take these systems, we put them in a field and we get B-52 bombers to blow the hell out of them. That's what I would do to assure the American people that these things aren't going to happen any more. But it doesn't look like the system, the Big Brother connection has no been unplugged."
