Germany: 'British war crimes' described by human rights lawyer

The European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) and the British lawyer organisation Public Interest Lawyers (PIL) held a briefing session for judges, law students, and members of the press in Berlin on Wednesday, after a torture complaint against British forces was filed to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ECCHR-PIL joint complaint was filed to the ICC last week on the grounds of alleged systemic torture carried out by British soldiers on Iraqi prisoners between 2003 and 2008, with a comprehensive 250-page report of analysis available on the ECCHR website.

Human rights lawyer at PIL Paul Shiner, reciting reports of abuse said, "Get them naked and keep them naked, if they don't cooperate. Those are the words on the page. Get them naked and keep them naked, if they don't cooperate."

He added: "The known consequences are suicide, risk of self harm, anxiety, nightmares, anger, aggression ... there is a long long terrible list."
