Germany: WWII bomb blows up and kills construction worker
A construction worker manning a digger was killed as a WWII bomb exploded and set his cabin alight in Euskirchen, Friday. The digger, who was killed instantly, accidentally struck the device during excavation works at around 13.30 CET (12.30 GMT). Two others have been taken to hospital and are in a critical condition. Eleven minor injuries were also sustained.
The blast reportedly smashed windows some 600 metres away from the blast site, with the effects of the explosion felt a kilometre away (0.6 miles).
WWII bombs are often found in Germany, following the nation's bombardment by Allied and Soviet forces, before falling in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's industrial hub, is the site of many as bombers targeted the industrial heartland's of the Third Reich. Bombs are usually disarmed when discovered.
