England: Green gym transforms muscle power into electricity
With energy costs soaring in the UK, the Cadbury House Health Club in Bristol showed off its approach to cutting costs on Friday. The equipment at the gym literally converts human exercise into energy, which powers the machines while surplus energy is channelled into the gym's own power supply.
In a time of economic difficulties, this has helped to significantly reduce the gym's electricity bills by around £1500 (€1,800, $2,500) a month. When interviewed, one member of the gym also pointed to the gym's environmentally friendly make-up, saying "it's quite a good initiative... because while you're getting yourself fit, you're also doing good for the environment."
The gym uses ARTIS Technogym machines, a system which cost a total of approximately £600,000 after installation. Given the high costs, some critics have questioned whether the equipment will be financially sustainable.
