Netherlands: Syrian chemical weapons progress "very significant - OPCW Director-General

The Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ahmet Uzumcu, spoke about Syria's chemical disarmament programme in the Netherlands on Monday. While the OPCW have conceded they will fail to meet the original December 31 deadline in removing the country's most potent chemical agents, Uzumcu argued that "progress" has still been "very significant."

Uzumcu described how "several categories of chemical weapons have already been destroyed and chemical weapons protection facilities... rendered unusable in a very short time." He also explained how all "chemical weapons were identified and prepared for transportation outside Syria," describing proceedings as "entering into a new phase."

In response to critics, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also defended the OPCW's disarmament operation on Saturday, claiming "effective progress" has been made. The organisation has scheduled an executive council meeting for January 8 to discuss operations in Syria.
